County Commission Honors Police, Merit Board, and Presents Arbor Day Proclamation
Floyd County commissioners recognized outstanding service and professionalism within the police department during its Tuesday meeting.
Each year, selected officers are presented with these awards by Floyd County Police Department Chief Mark Wallace to spotlight exceptional performance, compassion, and commitment to public safety.
“We are proud to honor these individuals and teams for actions that demonstrate courage, compassion and commitment to the community,” Floyd County Commission Chair Rhonda Wallace said. “These recognitions reflect the professionalism and dedication our officers bring to the people of Floyd County every day.”
Officer of the Year:
The Officers of the Year award was earned by Pfc. Brittany Werner and Pfc. Mallory Boatfield. While serving as school resource officers, they investigated a reported bullying incident and identified multiple warning signs that led to a broader inquiry. Their thorough investigation uncovered contact between a registered sex offender and several juveniles. The suspect was ultimately charged with numerous counts of sexual crimes against children in Floyd and Polk counties, as well as human trafficking, after investigators determined the individual was recruiting juveniles.
Officers of the Quarter:
The officer of the first quarter award was earned by Pfc. Edwin Orellana who located a missing dementia patient and stayed with the individual for more than 90 minutes until the patient’s wife arrived from out of county. He was commended for a compassionate response that provided comfort to the family.
The officer of the second quarter award was earned by Lt. Rusty Williams who responded to a wreck and went above and beyond to assist a young driver involved in her first crash. His calm demeanor and professionalism left a lasting impact.
The officer of the third quarter awards was earned by Pfc. Jonathan Bodenheimer and Pfc. Craig Stanfield who treated a 15-year-old who w suffering severe blood loss from a gunshot wound. They applied a tourniquet and packed the wound, stopping the bleeding and saving the teen’s life.
The officer of the fourth quarter award was earned by Capt. Ojilvia Lom and K-9 Billy who have assisted multiple agencies by locating critical electronic evidence in major investigations, contributing to successful prosecutions.
The Floyd County Police H.E.A.T. Unit was also recognized by the commission for their efforts in occupant safety, child restraint, and traffic enforcement. A proclamation was presented to Hannah Bagley of Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful for Arbor Day.
