For April 28, 2026, Release

Floyd County Commission Recognizes Corporal Jordan Taylor for Exemplary Actions During Shooting Call

The Floyd County Commission recognized Floyd County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Jordan Taylor for his exemplary actions during a shooting call in East Rome on April 8.

Corporal Taylor was one of the first officers to arrive on scene, where he located a 6-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper right leg. He quickly applied a tourniquet above the injury to help control the bleeding. Upon the arrival of EMS, Corporal Taylor carried the child to the gurney for transport to the hospital.

Immediately after ensuring the child received medical care, Corporal Taylor acted on information from witnesses who advised that a person involved in the shooting was inside a nearby apartment. With the assistance of two other officers, he approached the apartment, detained the suspect, and transferred custody to Rome Police Department officers for questioning.

Corporal Taylor’s quick thinking, composure, and decisive actions during a tense and chaotic situation reflect great credit upon himself, the Sheriff’s Office, and Floyd County.

Also, during the Tuesday, April 28 meeting, Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne thanked the Commission and Floyd County employees who worked to move and reopen the Tax Commissioner’s Office and Tax Assessor’s Office following the Floyd County Historic Courthouse fire. Payne also recognized the employees in his office who quickly adapted and continued providing services to Floyd County residents.

A proclamation for Animal Control Officers Week was presented to Public Animal Welfare Services Director, Katy Walters.

Commissioners also voted to expand the reach of a joint development authority with neighboring counties by passing a resolution to add Paulding County to the Joint Bartow, Floyd and Polk County Development Authority.

The Commission approved the appointments of Dr. Dan Hanks and David Newby to the Hospital Authority of Floyd County and approved the appointment of Devon Smyth to the Highland Rivers Board to fill an unexpired term.

Later this week, Floyd County will recognize 15 longtime employees representing more than 275 years of service to the community. The recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, April 30, at 8:30 a.m. and will honor employees from the Police Department, Sheriff’s Office, Tax Commissioner’s Office, Water Department, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation.
